A new year, A new Dawn

Dear readers of SECTOR,

The academic year has kicked off and with the members of SECTOR having gathered for the first time, by which we are also ready to start a new year of SECTOR articles. The SECTOR this year has had no large changes as in previous years, as we are still online and our webpage is as good as finished, with the last year being used to fix any errors, culminating in the current design you see now.

We are also delighted to showcase our new committee, both new and old, which will be the driving force behind SECTOR’s publications for the coming year.
To start, we have the chairman of SECTOR for this year, Just de Groot. He is a third year Econometrics and Operations Research student, with three years of experience to boot. His penchant for taking on more responsibility than necessary and general enthusiasm and work ethic has helped create many opportunities and articles for SECTOR, and we hope to see more to come.
The first new member of this year is Lorenzo Palonta, who is enrolled in the Master programme Econometrics and Operations Research at the Vrije Universiteit, with a particular interest in the Data Science department. He is Italian, and has only recently decided to move to the Netherlands for the master programme, and was even more recently convinced to join SECTOR. This well travelled man with a wealth of knowledge will be sure to provide SECTOR with high quality articles, good connections to potential authors, and interesting interviews.
The second new member is Nick Alsemgeest, one of the two first year students coming to reinforce SECTOR this year. Nick has already proven himself to be an initiative taking committee member, by approaching multiple professors and asking them for possible input on articles. On top of that, he is a football fanatic and very adaptive, quickly picking up on how to clearly and effectively communicate SECTOR’s message and benefits to possible authors. We look forward to his continued contributions to the committee.
The third and last new member of the SECTOR committee is Raphael Fromont, who is the second first year student coming to reinforce the SECTOR. He is a busy man, working at DeGiro while concurrently following a study in Econometrics, yet he is eager to use his business acumen and wide network of connections to provide interesting and valuable articles to SECTOR’s readers.
Lastly, we have our representative from the current board of Kraket, Denise van Dijk. She is an experienced member of Kraket, and has been an active member of Kraket for a long time, hosting all types of events from formal to informal, and will be actively supporting SECTOR by maintaining good contact with the external affairs officer, Mirte Pruppers, and bringing her own creativity to the bi-weekly SECTOR meetings to create new articles.

Our audience has become more varied and we wish to serve our readers well through these interdisciplinary articles.

Finally, we wish to write a message specifically to you, the reader. We want to thank you for your interest and time in the articles SECTOR produces, as without these two SECTOR would lose its relevance. We furthermore wish to continue the aim of last year, as detailed wonderfully by Martijn van Heusden in the article ‘SECTOR 2020/2021: Year in Review’, of trying to publish articles from more varied sources, to ameliorate the understanding of SECTOR’s readers of the use of Econometrics and Data Science in fields besides finance and economics. Our audience has become more varied and we wish to serve our readers well through these interdisciplinary articles.

We want to wish you all a good academic year and we hope you enjoy what SECTOR has to offer this year.

Look forward to next week’s article from IMC, where we interviewed a quant to discover the experience of working in the fast-paced environment of IMC. Discover the world of market-making and providing liquidity to the wider financial sector through IMC’s unique usage of econometrics and data science in this field.
